The Northmen in Banffshire

A number of sites in Banffshire are associated with the Danes and Norwegians in the early medieval period.

The term "Northmen" is preferred as "Viking" is not used until more modern times. Historically, the monks and scholars recording these events used many terms to describe these raiders and invaders from Scandinavia, but not Viking.

Here we will begin a journey to explore those associations and to look at the evidence.

The Death of Indulf

Leading his army to victory, King Indulf is slain in the final moments of the battle.

The Battle at Inverboyndie

In the area of Inverboyndie and Whitehills in Aberdeenshire, field names record a battle between Scots and Danes in the 10th century.

The Battle at The Bleeding Pits

In the early 11th century Scots roll boulders onto a Danish army to gain victory.
